Looking For Your Next Vehicle?

April 13, 2017

The 2017 New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) will take place April 14-23 at the Javits Convention Center in New York City. There will be around 1,000 cars and trucks on display. The New York Auto Show was the first North American auto show dating back to 1900. It is open to the public, Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sundays: 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

History

Over the years the NYIAS has held its yearly show throughout all the eras of time, the Great Depression, war periods, boom-time, oil crises, recession, and growth. There is a remarkable timeline of the improvements of each auto show.

  • 1900: The first International Automobile Show was held at Madison Square Garden. There were 69 exhibitors who displayed 160 complete vehicles. The vehicles on display were anywhere from $280 up to $4,000. When the first auto show came to an end, there were about 48,000 total visitors who attended throughout the week.
  • 1928: The auto show took place at Grand Central Place. This year was the first time since 1905 Ford was not the leader in the U.S. Automobile Market. Over 1 million people were in attendance throughout the week to see the new Ford Model A. There is speculation that the reason there were so many people at the show was because the ticket price was only $0.75 and not because of the Ford Model A.
  • 1972: This was the first year the show was held under the name, the Greater New York Automobile Show taking place at the New York Coliseum. Opening day included and antique car parade. There was a very special guest at this show, NASA, who displayed a fully-operational twin of the Apollo 15 lunar rover, which had a price tag of $38 million. This was the most expensive vehicle to ever be on display at the New York Auto show.
  • 1992: Going green being the theme during this New York International Automobile Show made the 100 mpg Ultralite by GM the star of the show. Saturn also became the only U.S. automobile company to break into the top three of J.D. Power’s, all-important customer satisfaction rating, in its first year of eligibility.
